Life Skills Worker

Six Months Contract (Bargaining Unit Position)

Mission Statement: Homes First Society develops and provides affordable, stable housing and support services to break the cycle of homelessness for people with the fewest housing options.

This position supports clients in their housing by assessing and supporting their needs and adhering to the mission statement and policies & procedures of Homes First Society.

Job Description:

  • provide support to clients who are facing issues of poverty, mental health, addictions, abuse, social isolation and more
  • Work one on one with each client, from a client-centered approach, allowing clients to identify their area of need and utilizing case management as a tool to support residents in meeting their goals
  • Assist clients and provide support to maintain and improve their daily living, including: practical assistance, basic life management skills, work readiness, anger management, addiction counseling, assertive communication, goal setting, giving and receiving feedback, self-esteem, conflict resolution, problem solving and managing change
  • Organize and facilitate a life skills class weekly
  • Knowledge of adult education principles
  • Demonstrated ability to work with people with hoarding behaviours and who have mental health and addiction issues.
  • Apply knowledge of group processes and dynamics
  • Use excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Work independently and as part of a team
  • Maintain client records professionally and confidentially in accordance with Homes First standards.
  • Communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary degree or equivalent
  • Life skills certificate or equivalent
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in all aspects of life skills coaching; working with groups and individuals
  • Several years’ experience working with people who are homeless, under-housed and who are hard to house
  • Knowledge of resources and services available in the community.
  • Excellent interpersonal, conflict resolution and organization skills.

Demonstrated understanding of the psychology of addiction, issues underlying addiction, trauma and mental health issues Experienced in case management, group facilitation and teaching adults Exceptional communication skills – written, verbal, and interpersonal Able to work independently and in inter-dependent teams, with minimum supervision in a busy and flexible environment Certificates in First Aid, CPR, Crisis Prevention and Intervention an asset Proficient in Microsoft Word and Outlook Experience working in a shelter setting an asset Cultural-sensitivity training an asset Ability to work evenings Other duties as required.

Working in an environment where there may be smoke is required.
