Overview Drop Labs is seeking an acoustic engineer, focused on DSP, for work on our innovative consumer electronics products.

We are seeking someone who can not only utilize existing DSP capabilities on-chip, but also write DSP code to conduct unusual audio signal processing (both frequency domain and time domain), conduct predictive analysis to review how we would expect the DSP code to functionally perform, and validate performance through electrical and electromechanical system measurements.

We work in a compact computational environment, where signals are delivered to our products by wire and by Bluetooth, so past experience with products with similar architectures (such as hearing aids or headphones, or small and portable audio products) is highly desirable.

You’ll be working with a cross-functional team of firmware, electrical, software, and acoustic engineers working together in our Los Angeles (Echo Park) office.

ResponsibilitiesExisting product development and refinement: Working to refine product audio tunings, and support continuous improvement activities as needed in response to feedback from the field.

New product development: Work on system DSP architecture.

Develop the target DSP signal chain that supports desired User Experience objectives.

Develop new algorithms and write DSP code for time-domain DSP.

Validate that the signal chain will operate as desired, without causing issues for product performance or reliability.

Validate that the product will work within the confines of the planned system chipsets.

Conduct measurements that help validate system performance.

Transition the code to on-chip environments.

Conduct measurements to validate performance of the overall system, and make adjustments to the DSP signal chain in response to the measurements as needed.

Work in collaboration with firmware, electrical, and acoustic engineering team members.

Ongoing research: Study the interaction between music, movies, games, and our products.

Work with the team on the Audio Platform Roadmap.

Evaluate various chipsets with our DSP requirements.

General: Develop code that is confirming to our internal code style guidelines.

Domestic and international travel, as needed, up to 10-20% of the time.

Support evening international conference calls as required.

RequirementsEducational background: BS or MS degree in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Physics, Computer Science, or Applied Mathematics.

DSP experience: 5+ years of experience working on the design of audio DSP in compact embedded systems: filters, limiters, compressors, and time-domain signal processing.

Programming experience: Experience working in assembly code.

Experience coding in C in a resource constrained OS-less environment.

Experience working with Matlab/Simulink/Simscape.

Experience with source control systems such as Git.

Testing experience: Experience with unit testing audio filters working in time and frequency domains.

Experience using Audio Precision, Soundcheck, or similar electrical measurement systems.

Project management experience: Excellent time management and interpersonal skills.

Able to problem solve and troubleshoot as the need arises, in parallel with other design activities.

Past product experience: Experience with mass production of consumer grade electronics is a plus.

Experience working with wireless audio streaming is a plus.

Experience debugging digital audio communication interfaces such as I2S is a plus.

Experience with working on headphones, hearing aids, or similar products is a plus.
