Power system test engineer

This is a Full-time position in Los Angeles, CA posted December 11, 2019.

Location & Travel:
• Primary work location is Northridge, CA
• Some travel to Menlo Park, CA is expected
• May be asked to travel internationally to support lab or field trials Summary: This is a test engineering role, primarily centered around the validation and characterization of power systems for early-stage projects to facilitate the adoption of the project into early-stage lab & field trials for cellular networks.

The engineer will be asked to validate various solutions mainly through analysis, test, and measurements and must have a logical and thorough approach to testing.

The engineer must have an excellent understanding of power systems, preferably those based on solar and battery equipment.

It is recommended, but not required, the that candidate be well-versed in the operation of remote, outdoor, off-grid power systems.

The engineer must have a good understanding of OEM equipment design (e.g.

pros, cons, capabilities, differences) and how this equipment is typically installed/commissioned/deployed/maintained in remote environments.

The engineer must also have good communication and reporting skills (e.g.

clearly documenting results, articulating status of projects, explaining value of new projects, etc.) The role is not directly related to software or hardware engineering, but mostly around systems/solutions engineering, early-stage deployments, and testing in lab and field environments.

Required Skills: 1.

Strong fundamentals in electrical circuits, power converters and energy storage.

2.

Demonstrated success in engineering testing, test setup, test plan execution, documentation, analysis and trouble shooting.

3.

Familiarity with common power equipment, vendors and configurations.

4.

Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, testing, and expected performance of solar panels, solar charge controllers, batter charge controllers, power system monitoring, AC/DC and DC/DC converters, MPPT controllers, UPS systems, and wiring diagrams.

5.

Knowledge of electrical safety standards and processes.

6.

Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, testing, and expected performance of various battery technologies (eg lead-acid, li-ion, li-po) over lab & field conditions.

7.

Experience with choosing and implementing power simulation and analysis software packages, logging tools, test equipment etc Desired Skills: 1.

Experience with cellular base station sites and radio equipment.

2.

Proficiency in Python or related scripting languages.

3.

Electrical circuit design, circuit bring up.

Duties: 1.

Develop and execute plans to test and measure power consumption for all of the elements of a cell site.

2.

Develop and maintain power budgets for cellular site configurations covering varying loading and environmental conditions.

3.

Configure and run analysis tools based off of analytical and measured data to derive optimal power system configurations.

4.

Write test plans & procedures covering functional & performance testing of power system components (e.g.

solar controller, battery, charge controller, etc.) 5.

Perform fault handling analysis and document fault response processes.

6.

Write test scripts that will execute test procedures.

7.

Procure, configure, integrate, and operate both power test equipment and unit-under-test power system components in both lab & field environments.

8.

Conduct testing.

Collect, analyze and synthesize test data.

Perform troubleshooting and anomaly investigations.

9.

Develop and execute operator-level test plans for validation of requirements.

Identify issues, troubleshoot, and document test results.

10.

Engage with ecosystem partners (e.g.

operators, equipment vendors, test equipment vendors) during lab trials.

11.

Assemble and integrate power system components into an outdoor cell site cabinet and in both lab & field environments.

12.

Contribute to the development of complex projects via writing and reviewing specifications and test plans, with focus on power.

13.

Dimension cell site power systems based on specific requirements.

14.

Document power design configurations, installation instructions, wiring diagrams, equipment settings and troubleshooting guides.
