This is a Full-time position in Stratford, CA posted October 6, 2019.

We have one opening for a Senior Advocate.

This position is available in our Oakland, Los Angeles, or San Diego offices.

and Development and Management of Major Initiatives (as assigned)As assigned by the Executive Director, oversee the development of major CFPA initiatives which, by design, require some combination of the following: multiple CFPA staff, multiple funders, multi-year investments of CFPA resources, and multiple external partners.Provide strategic guidance and day-to-day management of major CFPA initiatives. Under the direction of the Executive Director, engage funders and other stakeholders in developing resources to support these major initiatives.Project and Grant Management (as assigned)Develop and oversee work plans for assigned projects.Coordinate internal meetings and activities for the project team.Act as the primary external contact for stakeholders engaged in issues pertaining to the project.Take primary responsibility for ensuring that the project’s grant obligations are met.Management and Supervision (as assigned)Oversee supervisees’ individual work plans and facilitate their professional development.Conduct weekly check-in meetings with supervisees to track progress on individual work plans and professional development.Conduct interim and annual performance evaluations with supervisees.Policy Advocacy (as assigned)Daily activities generally include developing, advocating, and implementing policy solutions; analysis; research; writing for a variety of audiences; and speaking with numerous, varied stakeholders.

More specifically, daily activities may include:Crafting and delivering persuasive arguments; identifying key messages and messengers; mapping power and influence; and otherwise advocating to increase access to nutritious, affordable food for Californians with low income;Engaging with diverse groups of stakeholders, including, but not limited to, individuals experiencing hunger and food insecurity; community-based organizations; researchers; advocacy organizations; government administrators; and elected officials;Gathering stories and perspectives; analyzing data; and synthesizing research or other evidence to inform proposed and existing policies;Drafting policy memos, factsheets, reports, and other written publications as well as summarizing content into visually appealing materials for a variety of audiences;Actively representing CFPA at state and local meetings relevant to CFPA’s mission, priorities, and agendas; building the capacity of others to engage in advocacy;Note: To carry out the above responsibilities, same-day travel within the state is required.

Occasional overnight travel is required.

Travel requirements will vary by project and assignments and are not always predictable. The ideal candidate has significant experience with advocacy, project and grant management, persuasive communication, and strategic thinking, in addition to possessing a strong commitment to improving food security, nutrition, health, and well-being for low-income Californians.Required Skills and ExperienceAt least seven years of relevant work experience.

Relevant coursework may contribute to this requirement OR A graduate degree in a relevant field, such as public policy, public health, social welfare, or nutrition and at least four years of relevant work experience;Excellent written communication skills Excellent verbal communication skillsDemonstrated project management and initiative coordination experienceProblem-solving, analytical, and critical thinking skills; The ability to work independently, coordinate projects, and respond appropriately to multiple priorities; and Experience managing people, projects, and grantsDesired Skills and ExperienceDemonstrated skills and experience with respect toStrategic communications or media advocacy;Policymaker education and lobbying;Community organizing and engagement; Policy-relevant research and data analysis; and/orData visualization and mappingAdvocacy experience with poverty, health, nutrition or a related social movementKnowledge of issues affecting low-income populationsExperience working with elected officials and/or administrators in education, health, or human servicesAn understanding of and a willingness to address institutional and structural racism, implicit and explicit bias, and their impacts on under-resourced and underrepresented communities Experience incorporating the perspectives of multiple communities, particularly under-resourced and under-represented communities, in policy, programmatic, or operational decisions Experience considering the impacts of proposed and existing policies or programs on multiple communities, particularly under-resourced and under-represented communitiesDemonstrated fluency and/or literacy in more than one languageCFPA is actively working to build a talented team that’s inclusive of diverse cultures, experiences, and communities.
